NEW INQUEST on Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed’s death…

Car tried to slow Diana vehicle for photographers: inquest

In from LONDON , an unidentified car tried to slow down the vehicle carrying Princess Diana to her death in a Paris road tunnel, apparently so that chasing photographers could catch up, a witness said Wednesday.

Olivier Partouche, who was standing on the side of the road as Diana’s Mercedes sped towards the Pont de l’Alma tunnel on August 30, 1997, said the car formed a “compact” group with several motorbikes behind.

“In front of the Mercedes was a car, of which I could not tell you the make,” he said in a statement made to French police and read out at the London inquest into her death and that of her Egyptian boyfriend Dodi Fayed.

“It was dark in colour and clearly this car was trying to make the Mercedes slow down… The object of the manoeuvre was to make it possible for the paparazzi to take photographs.”

In another statement to French police he said the vehicle in front of the doomed Mercedes “did not perform any dangerous manoeuvres on the road to prevent it (the Mercedes) getting past”.

Speaking to the inquest Wednesday he said he thought that the dark car, which he described as a Ford Mondeo style mid size saloon and the motorcycles had formed a “compact group” around the princess’s vehicle.

“I was just of the impression of a kind of a group, with in the front of the group the car and the motorcycles just behind at the same speed,” he said.

Diana, ex~wife of heir to the throne Prince Charles, was killed alongside Fayed and their chauffeur Henri Paul in the high speed car crash.

Fayed’s father Mohamed Al~Fayed, the millionaire owner of London’s upscale Harrods department store, believes they were killed in a plot hatched by Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, and the British security services.

The plot was conceived because Diana, 36, was carrying Fayed’s unborn child and the royal family did not want her to marry a Muslim, Al~Fayed claims.

The inquest started at the beginning of the month and is expected to last up to six months. It previously travelled to Paris for the jurors to see the scene of the crash and the Ritz hotel for themselves.
